A bit of history: EuroBasket 2013 – Piratasdelbasket

On the occasion of EuroBasket 2022, what could be better than doing a little memory to remember past editions. 2013 was the year for French basketball to climb to the highest step of the European podium. Finally “Le Blue” imposed its power and quality to win Gold

EuroBasket 2013 Final: French quality and power win gold

In 2013, the European Championship was held in Slovenia, where during the grand final and especially after the first quarter, there was only one team on the track and it was Parker’s France , Batum, Diaw and company. A very good generation “Le bleu” finally brings the Gauls to win a Eurobasket for the first time in history. Lithuania silver in a final that was never to be rivaled, 80-66 on the scoreboard at the final whistle

In the semi-final, Spain lost in extra time to a better performing France in the final sprint of the match by 72-75. In the other semi-final, Lithuania easily beat Croatia 77-62. In the fight for bronze, Spain are far superior to the Croatians and the metal is ours after a clear 92-66.

The French team was proclaimed, for the first time in its history, European champions by beating Lithuania 80-66 in the Eurobasket final.

The game lacked emotion since in the second quarter the Gauls energized the game with a series of 31-12, which allowed them to have a quiet end in which they could savor what is already their first major victory in Europe.

The theoretical superiority in pivots of the Lithuanians, had no transfer to the scoreboard, almost on the contrary. Ajinca dominated in the opening minutes as Lithuanian coach Jonas Kazlauskas brought his big spare battery back to the position.

First it was Darjus Lavrinovic, then Robertas Javtokas and later Jonas Valanciunas, player of the Toronto Raptors of the NBA, without obtaining superiority in the paint. Quite the contrary, because an almost marginal player like Johan Petro has become a wall against which the great Lithuanians have crashed.

In fact, he came in as an encore for Ajinca and stayed on the trail for the entire second quarter considering his great performance.

Lithuania dominated the first quarter 19-22, thanks to the excellent goalscoring level of Linas Kleiza, author of 11 points, while in France, Nicolas Batum was the most successful, even if almost all his teammates have seen the hoop.

France does not give options
The Baltics tried to come out in the second quarter with a more aggressive defense and at times they changed zone. Big mistake, France found their turning point there and exploded on the scoreboard, with Batum in stiletto, with a partial of 31-12, to go to the locker room with a 50-34 which meant a half title, at least.

Moreover, the last game was like a stab in the heart of the Lithuanian, because not only did he lose a stupid ball with 9 tenths of a second remaining, but he allowed a three-point shot from Diot, which came home !

Lithuania, more out of rage than intelligence, tried to come back in the match and the final but the success now of Diaw (13 points in the third quarter) and the direction of Tony Parker, a true artist when he s trying to control the pace of the game made all their efforts wasted.

As time went on, the Lithuanian players stopped believing in themselves and individually tried to solve all the problems that had led them to the extreme situation of finishing the third quarter losing 18 points, 68-50.

With such an advantage just ten minutes from the end, France felt champions and were limited to managing their income, savoring every moment of the match before their imminent crowning of European champions.
